10 on the 10th

It's almost 10 pm, planned that for the 10th. Ha not really, I check the date a few days before the 10th saying ok it's coming up and I don't forget but today was just hectic. Then when I was done with my running around I had to lay prostrate and cast my cares for a while before I even attempted to write. I think the last Daybook I wrote I was in a bad mood and you can tell. So anyway whatever, rambling. I have so many things I can do but since Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday it is only right that this month's 10 on the 10th is about...

Things I love about Thanksgiving

1. Getting together with family or friends without the need for gift giving to overshadow the day. It feels good to just get together, just you, just show up, that's all that is expected. I care to see you, not what you bought me. I like that.

2. Focusing on my blessings. I am naturally more of a glass 1/2 empty person and try really hard not to be. I have SO many more positive things in my life to be thankful for but focus on the few things that aren't so great. In my head I know better too. Weird. Anyway, I'd like to be thankful and positive everyday.

3. Of course the food. My favorite two things are my cornbread dressing and sweet potato casserole. Oh and cranberry sauce. That canned jelly kind to go with the dressing. I really like my step mom's turkey gravy too. I miss having green bean casserole but I've tried making it with different brands of cream of mushroom soup (without msg) and it's just not the same.

4. Going for a walk after we eat, playing board games and then taking a nap while my hubby watches football. Darn tryptophan! Yeah right, I just love naps.

5. My kids being out of school for a long weekend. Man I love being with them.

6. Looking through ads and saying I so don't need any of this crap. I'm not a shopper. Not into stuff. It doesn't make me happy, things break, they rip, they get lost. I went shopping on black Friday for the first time last year because a friend asked and I would rather stay home. I did get good deals I must say.

7. Memories of Thanksgivings past. I don't live near my family anymore and Thanksgiving is the hardest day to be away. But I remember getting together and laughing with my family so hard about silly things. Or when my grandparents were alive the whole Italian family got together. It was the best. As a little girl I loved getting milk coffee (more milk than coffee) and Italian cookies and running around with cousins.

8. Going to Granny's. I have never had Thanksgiving at my home. It's always at grandparents, so my turn is a long way off. It's so nice to show up with a dish and that's it. Then the women rally around in the kitchen and help out, chit chatting and it's just a special time. I hope I do a good job when I'm a Grandma. There's a clip from Nicole Johnson you might be familiar with, The Invisible Woman, at the end she talks about wanting to have a home that the kids want to come to for Thanksgiving. Makes me think.

9. The pie. That should have gone with food but as I'm getting near to the end of the day in my mind I remembered the pie. My favorites would be pumpkin and pecan. Oh yum.

10. Leftovers. Heating up some of that delicious goodness the next day...mmmm. Not having to cook a meal...aahhh. Weighing myself...oooohhh.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18

  1. I think Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday after July 4!

LOVED your list. I relate to so much of it, Christen. This year we're traveling which is hard for me, but it feels like the right thing to do.

Did you know Thanksgiving in ONLY two weeks away? Yikes!

  2. Christen, I went over and viewed the Nicole Johnson clip. Very inspiring. And on a really shallow note, I just loved her hair. ;)

Enjoy your Thanksgiving, and really enjoy the nap! I'll be napping here, too.
